The book also meanders with Marlowe not seeming overly enfused to track down the crimes and with the clues coming in a mix of relevance that belongs more to the real world than detective novels. Whilst the film’s representation of women is problematic, in that sense that many 70’s films were (or now are seen to be), the choice to change who the criminal is (one of the male characters instead of the original female of the book) is also of the real world. Violence in the real world is 99.9% committed by males and despite this the trope of the evil femme fatale continues unabated. Also, a young Arnie in the get naked scene!
