68. Jim Jarmusch
JIM JARMUSCH
STRANGER THAN PARADISE, MYSTERY TRAIN, DEAD MAN, DOWN BY LAW, BROKEN FLOWERS
A filmmaker that is undeniably hip, yet has devoted his career to deconstructing what “hip” really means, Jim Jarmusch is as cool as it gets. His characters- often plays by pop culture icons such as Tom Waits or Joe Strummer- are detached from society, keeping it at arm’s length. These people are outsiders and that’s just the way they like it. In that way, Jarmusch creates characters very similar to his audience. And then, just when we’re inundated with coolness, Jarmusch pulls back the curtain to reveal people that are alone, frustrated, and deeply wounded. Unlike many other independent filmmakers, for whom “cool” is the ultimate goal, Jim Jarmusch sees cinematic hipness as a means of human exploration.
