I love this aspect ratio episode idea. I remember when I was in my teens my cinephile brother telling me that widescreen was the only legitimate way to watch movies, to the point where if I saw something intended to be full screen it seemed lesser somehow, but without understanding why. Later on, reading up on why these ratios exist and how they were done (masking/anamorphic/etc.) was fascinating.

I was also hoping to hear David’s take on a major Last Man On Earth event from a couple weeks ago, an event that made me consider not watching the show anymore.

Second on the aspect ratio episode, it only seems like it would be boring but it’s a great topic. First Academy, then TV provokes the terrible Cinerama format, then a genius invents anamorphic and Cinemascope, then mega Cinemascope formats like Ultra Panavision. Then there’s the three standard ratios for matte widescreen, none of which were chosen for HDTV. See, not boring.

I’d love an episode on aspect ratios, but I think a guest or two would be essential.

i seem to recall seeing the kneeling/clapping pilgrims in a Werner Herzog documentary…maybe Wheel of Time? It was back when i went thru my Herzog phase, and all those blend together – White Diamond/Lessons in Darkness/Wheel of Time/Encounters at the End of the World.

Obviously, Encounters stands out with its Penguin Madness, and the White Diamond has some great photography of the waterfall and that one guy’s beloved chicken.
