anyone else find it funny that for David, a “really, really good movie” (his words) like Lost City of Z garners only a B+? that verbiage suggests a higher rating to me. What would he say about a solid A? “really, really, really fucking fantastic”??

I’d say that, to use the phrase “really, really good”, but never being quite able to dip into “great” would equal a B+. Tantalizing close to an A, but not quite.

“Really, really, really fucking fantastic” is what I would say about a solid A.

I mean, not literally, but I certainly wouldn’t give a movie that’s merely “really, really good” an A.

The best argument for the uselessness of letter grades or star ratings is that everyone has their own internal scale for what makes a three, four, or five star movie, or what the difference between an A and a B is. Like, four out of five is an 80%, but who thinks of a four star movie as a B-?

David and I have had this discussion before, except that he thinks a 3 1/2 star movie is a failure because that’s a C+ in his head. He’s really weird.

I’ve gotten into keeping track of the movies I watch on a yearly basis, and part of that is rating them on a scale from 1-10. I’ve found it useful, but I often need to clarify to myself that a certain movie is “more a 7.6” then say, a full 8/10. It’s neurotic and more than a little arbitrary, but it helps me make sense of my movie watching in the long run.
