The BP Top Ten of 2016

25 Feb

This list was compiled from the individual top ten lists of Jim, Craig, Alexander, Sarah, Matt, Ian, Julie, Marya, Rudie, Aaron, Scott, Tyler, and David. Each film was weighted according to its placement on each individual list. As such, a film that appeared on only two writers’ lists could still wind up on the finalized list if it placed particularly high. Conversely, a film could conceivably be on everybody’s list, but not make the final list, due to low point value.

Honorable Mentions: American Honey, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, O.J.: Made in America

Jim’s Top Ten of 2016

19 Feb

I made a determined effort in 2016 to see as many critically lauded films as I possibly could, telling myself that the inadequacy and incompleteness that I’ve imminently felt when it came time for year-end top ten lists would, for once, be somewhat stifled. Yet, here I am, attempting to write a top ten list having not seen Weiner, Hell or High Water, I Am Not Your Negro, Kubo and the Two Strings, Certain Women, and too many other films to count that other bloggers and podcasters have raved about. I’ve let go of the idea that my opinions represent that of any significant corner of the film criticism world and thus, present to you, faithful reader, a meager representation of my limited exposure to the world of 2016’s cinema.

Craig’s Top Ten of 2016

17 Feb

2016 has been my favorite year in film since I began writing for Battleship Pretension a few years ago. It pains me that I can’t include more films on this list, so before I begin, I want to list all of the films that didn’t make my list but left a significant impression: Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Arrival, Green Room, 20th Century Women, Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru, Hell or High Water, 13th, Swiss Army Man, Gleason, The Jungle Book, Hail, Caesar, Weiner-Dog, The Nice Guys, Keanu, Jim: The James Foley Story, and Kubo and the Two Strings.

There were a lot of great films this year. Here are my 10 favorite:
