Two things:
1. George W. Bush does speak Spanish.
2. I remember an early episode of Family Matters (circa 1989) where Ma Winslow says, “Come on, Carl, it’s almost the Nineties.” A very forward-thinking show, that one.
I do recall an episode of Alvin and the Chipmunks with Alvin saying “It’s the Eighties!”
I think part of the reason people were saying “it’s the 90s” and the 90s were the way they were has to do with as Tricky called it “Pre-Millenium Tension”. On the one hand, there was, whether consciously or consciously, the looming dread of a possible end of days. 2000- 0- 0 Party Over. And on the other hand the feeling that after the fall of communism and with all our technical advancements that we had reached The End of History as it were. In any case, the end of a tumultuous century, the end of a millenium (how often has that happen?) – the end of an era.
