The ever-underrated Frankenheimer/Mamet thriller “Ronin” takes place at Christmas, but the holiday is far from “ubiquitous”. Likewise, The Bourne Identity – the viewer don’t know it’s Christmastime until they break into Eamon’s house, and see the lights.

Also, along the same lines as Harry Potter, doesn’t the first Chronic(what?)cles of Narnia take place at Christmas? The kids are sooooo worried that Father Christmas won’t be able to find them (since they’ve been evacuated from the city for the blitz)?

Or is it just *in Narnia* that the presence of the evil queen is threatening Christmas? All i remember is: Father Christmas shows up around the same time Azlan gets his shit together.

I’ve always considered Trading Places to be a New Years Even movie, b/c that’s when the big final setpiece takes place (essentially). The train ride is NYE, and the first business day of the year is the climax.

I can’t believe the Steven Spielberg opus 1941 was forgotten.

It’s been a couple of days since I heard the podcast but did you guys mention the Christmas scenes in “Goodfellas”? When De Niro chews out Johnny Roastbeef at the mobster Christmas party while the Ronettes (?) “Frosty the Snow Man” plays on the soundtrack. “What did I tell you?! What did I tell you, huh?! Nothing big!” he yells for Johnny buying a pink Cadillac and parking right outside the club just after the big airport heist. The Frankie Carbone walks in right after with his wife wearing an expensive fur coat, De Niro- without missing a beat- sees this and says “What are you fuckin’ stupid? Get it outta here, get it out!” Hilarious. Ray Liotta does ‘the right thing’ with his cut and buys the ‘most expensive tree they have!”, a gaudy fake white xmas tree with purple ornaments!

This is my 2nd comment in a row I mentioned Goodfellas.

Goodfellas was on my very long list but I don’t think I got around to mentioning it.

“I got the biggest tree they had!” is further support for my claim that Goodfellas is the funniest non-comedy movie of all time.
