You guys mentioned “Dead Man” when thinking about heavy-Billy-Bob Thornton. All I can think of is Tombstone.

  2. Great choice this week. Nicely done too.

I don’t know if you guys read novels for pleasure, but you should really check out the novel A Simple Plan by Scott Smith that the movie is based on. It’s a much deeper and more satisfying exploration of the characters and themes from the movie as well as a significantly more twisty and pulpy plot. For example, the final scene between the Paxton and Thornton characters is not only far more brutal in the novel, but takes place about halfway in.

It’s a great movie, but it’s also a tragedy without catharsis and incredibly depressing. I remember going home from the theatre with a stomachache. Sounds like the book is a bit easier to take.

I have read the book and I love it. I see the book and movie as two different takes on the same premise. The book is incredibly tense and the movie is incredibly sad. Both are great.

Did you watch the movie first? Because I read the book when it came out, years before the movie and I basically was like one of those Game of Thrones book people. I couldn’t embrace the movie on its own terms because all I could think about was what they left out.
It’s why I’m not going to read The Circle until after I watch the Hanks movie.

I definitely read the book first but I did so in anticipation of the movie coming out.

I saw mean dream at a festival this september. He was the highlight as a corrupt cop who pursues his daughter and boy friend when they steal money from Paxton.
