Cool stories, great discussion, and awesome voice. Would love to see him back for that de Palma profile episode (or one for babs).

Pregnant? Think you’re pregnant, wise guy?

Really enjoyed this one, especially the viewpoints on what a movie review is/should be. Some nice insights I will carry forward in my own writing. It was sort of alluded to in the discussion but I always struggle with the ‘evaluative’ aspect of writing about a movie. I think most readers first think of a review as something evaluative that will answer the basic questions, is it good? Should I see it? Whereas I think of the evaluative aspect as a by-product of the sorts of things you discussed — the experience, the feelings you had watching the film. In my own writing (blog not updated in ages unfortunately) I’ve often taken a deconstructionist approach, trying to determine what I think the filmmaker intended…but I feel I’d be wise to reframe that more in terms of my own experience and consider why I might be seeing things through that particular filter, and incorporate that into the writing. I suppose that’s where the “voice” Chuck talked about starts to break through.

    Thanks guys!
