To answer Tyler’s question (though I am not part of any awards body): yes I really did see 3 Billboards and thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s not perfect (Willoughby’s character doesn’t entirely gel together) and it’s not my favorite film of the year (that would be The Florida Project), but I’d be perfectly happy with it winning plenty of awards. In fact I’d get a bit of schadenfreude from all the online chatter about the “blowback” to it being shown irrelevant.

I would like to make a retraction to a statement I made in the podcast. I grouped the Screen Actors Guild awards in with other trade awards that began in the late-1940s, including the Directors Guild and Writers Guild prizes. The SAG Awards started much much later and I am very sorry for my error. I definitely do not want to misrepresent any of this history.

The World Series is named after the newspaper that originally sponsored it, The New York World. I don’t know if Eddie Izzard actually said that, but a hundred other hacks have.
