Episode 581: TCM Classic Film Festival 2018 Wrap-Up

In this episode, David and guest co-host Scott Nye are joined by Julie Sesnovich to discuss the movies they saw at this year’s TCM Classic Film Festival.
The permutations of Heaven Can Wait are so convoluted, that as fun as your explanation was, David, it didn’t include the icing on that Cake Mélange. There was an actual remake of Here Comes Mr. Jordan’s ersatz sequel, Down to Earth (1947). Xanadu (1980). The sequel to Beatty’s picture is Xanadu.
That fact really ties the room together.
So the play Heaven Can Wait was turned into a film, but by the time it got started, there was already a movie in the works with that title, 1943’s Heaven Can Wait, so this one got called Here Comes Mr. Jordan (1941). Mr. Jordan was followed by Down to Earth (1947), a musical loosely connected by Mr. Jordan, not even played by Claude Rains this time. In 1978, Beatty remade Here Comes Mr. Jordan, this time calling it Heaven Can Wait. Then in 1980, Down to Earth was remade in a disco and roller-skating milieu, and called Xanadu. To top it off, Chris Rock remade Heaven Van Wait (Here Comes Mr. Jordan [Heaven Can Wait]) in 2001, and called it? …Down to Earth.

Your comment about Mark Twain (“…despite his shit being racist…”) genuinely shocked me. Are you actually referring to “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”? Have you read it? Do you know that its whole point is an indictment of slavery and racism? If you’ve never seen it, please watch Ken Burns’s two-part documentary on Mark Twain. Several writers and scholars, many of them black, talk about what a brilliant, subversive work of art that book is and how much humanism and empathy underlie Twain’s genius. Or maybe Dick Gregory and David Bradley just aren’t as woke as you.
