We’re having issues with our embeddable player right now, but we’re working on it. In the meantime, you will be able to hear the episode on iTunes.

After listening to you all talk about fast food and then mentioning Springfield, now I want cashew chicken.

That Willie Nelson line “I was just going to get drunk…” is from Wag the Dog. Willie plays the songwriter who’s charged with writing the “We Are the World” rallying song for the “war” the US is waging against Albania (another Willie great line – “Albania is hard to rhyme…”)

Wag the Dog – one of Mamet’s best scripts, in his late 90’s-early 00’s run of The Edge, Ronin, and Spartan

Did I forget to mention what movie that was from, or cite the wrong one? Sorry about that.
And, yes, Hoffman’s response to “Albania is hard to rhyme” is wonderful. “What are you looking at me for? It’s the name of the country.”
      I do love that movie.

you didn’t mis-attribute it, you just didn’t say. But i’m always here to stan for Wag the Dog (and the great Mark Knopfler soundtrack).

It’s notorious for its timeliness around the Lewinsky affair, but it’s even more prescient about the nebulous War on Terror that never ends. The conversation DeNiro has with Macy – “You’re going to fight a 2-ocean war against WHO, exactly?” ages very well.

Ted Levine’s safecracking character on the show Crime Story became a singer in Vegas partway through the show (before returning to crime), but he was more of an Elvis knockoff than a country singer.

A somewhat recent film I was aware of and thought might get a mention is “A Country Called Home”. It stars Imogen Poots, with McKenzie Davis as a transman aspiring country singer, and neither of them are even Americans. The upcoming “Wild Rose” stars the Irish actress Jessie Buckley as another aspiring country singer, but she’s Scottish in the film rather than pretending to be a southern American.

I’m very excited for Wild Rose, mostly because Jessie Buckley was so amazing in Beast.

Josh’s last line in the podcast — “We’ve gotta do one more where we just talk a bunch.” Yes, the Summer Movie Preview! He’s got be there for that this year!
