You have every reason to hate Douglas. His selection sucks! To ease into Tarkovsky, you should have watched Stalker and Andrei Rublev, maybe Nostalghia. Not Ivan’s Childhood. Not Mirror.

Interesting. Perhaps I’ll bring this idea up to him if I opt to revisit some past filmmakers and guests like I did this past summer. To his credit, I will say it’s an unenviable task to dilute a filmmaker’s essence down to 3 films. I had my moments of second guessing myself when I had to choose only 3 Billy Wilder films.

I think The Handmaiden not being selected by South Korea hurt it in all other categories because I just can’t believe enough of the Academy would watch it.

As far as supporting actors nominated go, Dev Patel being supporting is far more aggregious than Viola Davis in my opinion.

I need to stop trying to post comments on the mobile site. I have no idea why this posted here instead of the Oscar nomination podcast post, where it was intended.

Ivan’s Childhood is a relatively (for Tarkovsky) accessible movie. But since he’s a replacement for the original director, it’s less Tarkovsky-esque and perhaps not representative enough for this feature.
