What is the criteria of this list/how did it come about? Is this the website’s staff’s favorite movies? I ask because of 400 Blows placement. I enjoy the movie, but it’s not my go to on a rainy day or anything like that.

At the same time, it was so nice seeing Big Lebowski on a “best of list” in the same ranks as Jaws, Breathless, Raiders, good company for Dude, Walter, and crew (how it doesn’t make the “1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die” books is beyond me). No list is easy, but putting it above Psycho…one word: ballsy.

I would say this is a strong list of influential and entertaining movies that any film maker or student should make all efforts to watch two times each, minimum. Enjoyed the list.

This list was compiled by our listeners. If one movie is above another, it is because it was selected by more people.

I guess the only glaring omission is that no “Horror” movie made the list, I would have strongly considered Carpenter’s The Thing, Chainsaw Massacre, Scream, Rosemary’s Baby…Brave Little Toaster.

  3. Very interesting list, and some really surprising choices by ‘listeners.’ Your listeners must be some pretty high-class critics to call Citizen Kane the greatest of all time, because I don’t know anyone that agrees with that ranking (other than those in the AFI). I do love that film, but I always flinch when I see it ranked so highly, I mean, there are better films than that!

It’s a fantastic list! I’d just love to rearrange some of the placements. I’d put Casablanca higher, Citizen Kane lower, Psycho higher etc. Nonetheless, I’ve seen nearly all of these films and I’m just happy to see them acknowledged 🙂
