21. Ridley Scott

RIDLEY SCOTTALIEN, BLADE RUNNER, GLADIATOR, BLACK HAWK DOWNRidley Scott’s career as a journeyman means that his filmography suffers from highs and lows. However, Scott’s place as one of the best filmmakers of all time is firmly cemented due to two of his first films, Alien and Blade Runner. While that is not to say he has followed those films with only disappointment, those are the films that bring weight to his name in a cinematic sense. Never quite reaching the greatness of his early films, Scott has certainly come close with several almost-masterpieces. From Gladiator to the director’s cut of Kingdom of Heaven, Scott has clearly not lost his edge, and with a new sci-fi epic on the horizon with Prometheus, it is possible we will see Scott return to form. Few directors can work on the scope that Ridley Scott has defined his career with, and that makes him a special talent in cinema.See the full list HERE.

“Ridley Scott’s career as a journeyman means that his filmography suffers from highs and lows.” No doubt Scott has a special talent, but that sentence hardly applies as per it’s assertion – being that journeyman filmography naturally suffers from highs and lows. All you need to do is look at Howard Hawks, Sidney Lumet, the Coen Brothers, and Spielberg to see clear evidence of that. Disappointingly, journeymen directors are horribly underrated. It’s time we took another look at that theory.
