Flux capacitor. 88 miles per hour. 1.21 jigowatts. These terms don’t really mean much (in some cases, they’re complete nonsense), but, to an entire generation of film fans, they’re practically gospel. Back to the Future was such a popular film that many aspects of American culture of that decade are a direct result of it. However, in the midst of this inescapably-80s time travel flick, director Robert Zemeckis managed to craft a rather disturbing Oedipal tale that ultimately extolled the virtues of reserving judgment of past generations. At one time, they were just like us, which invariably leads to the haunting theory that, some day, we’ll be just like them.
