62. In the Mood for Love (2000)
directed by Kar Wai Wong
The operative word in the title is not “love,” as one would assume, but rather “mood.” Love may be in the air in Wong Kar-Wai’s tale of two could-be lovers who are just as repressed by their society as they are by their own decency, but it never manages to form into a solid. That’s what makes the movie so remarkable. In the Mood for Love may be the greatest date movie of all time because by the end, you and your date will both be desperate for some kind of release.
