    I will also bring up Dashiell Hammett’s “Red Harvest,” a book about a private detective called into a city filled with corrupt officials and gangsters to clean the place up. He does so by playing one side against the other, without ever letting anybody know where his loyalties lie. It’s a wonderful book that was a clear influence on both of these films (along with the Coens’ “Miller’s Crossing,” which also incorporated elements of Hammett’s “The Glass Key.”)
