I don’t live in California, so I can’t say how much people actually talk about the Santa Ana winds but in addition to “The Holiday” there is at least one other pop culture moment that features the Santa Ana winds heavily. The TV series “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” (I feel like David said he watched this, but I can’t remember) has this song/earworm: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J5XdQ5q2PIA — so maybe it’s not that everyone knows about the Santa Anas, just that those who know about them care A LOT.
That episode is full of great examples of how Angelenos talk about the Santa Ana winds, from attributing weird, mystical hooey to them to (correctly) blaming them for fucking with your allergies.
