I like to think we can all admit by this point that Obama was naive, horribly incompetent in many cases, cold & smug more often than necessary, unwilling to challenge a rotten status quo… but the idea that we should equivocate Bush & Obama is ridiculous. There’s a reason the media goes harder on Bush, and that’s because on the arbitrary presidential scale, he was like, a -5 or -6 compared to Obama, who is a 2 or a 3. For all the problems with Obamacare, Benghazi, ATF gunwalking, and so on, you can’t say Obama approaches tyrannical, like kidnapping men across the ocean for the sake of torture does.

I’ve seen a lot of movies since the last BP Movie Journal, so I’m gonna fly through these real quick. I was on a bit of a low/middle brow kick.

The Bad News Bears – I love Matthau.
The Last Shot – so close to good, but doesn’t make it.
    American Buffalo – liked it.
    Slap Shot – loved it.
Real Genius – enjoyed it a great deal.
Tombstone – liked the movie, loved Kilmer.
Overboard – kind of a creepy premise.
The Equalizer – I keep on liking Fuqua as a director, but he isn’t getting the screenplays he deserves.
The Drop – weird ending ruins the movie.
Fury – agreed on good visuals ruined by cliches.
Into the Storm – eh, was it ever gonna be good?
The Interview – enjoyed this much more than I was expecting
Contact – overblown, but so wonderfully sincere.
A Christmas Story – didn’t grow up with it, but it’s fine.
Joe Versus the Volcano – Got interested in this a whole ago when Rabin covered it on Year of Flops, but it is really a fun movie.
From Beyond – absolutely bizarre movie.

Here’s some of what I watched, but I really want to know if Tyler and David have seen the last one.

Big Hero 6 – fun and fast, but I would liked to see it in 3D
Godzilla vs. Hedorah – aka Godzilla vs. the Smog Monster. Pretty dumb, but I love those effects
The Housemaid – I’d seen the recent remake when it came out, and I was gald to finally get a chance to catch up with the original.
Psycho – Gus van Sant’s remake. I kinda loved it.
They Came Together – I watched this three times, once with the commentary. Very funny, but I feel the minuscule budget gets in the way of some of the jokes Wain is trying to pull off. Give him more money!!
The Way Way Back – enjoyable but forgettable
Tributes – Pulse – from the guy who made Decasia. Not as interesting as that was, but it has its moments.
The Usual Suspects – Hadn’t seen this in years. Starting to feel a little creaky.
Role Models – watched with Wain’s commentary. Informative if not entertaining in its own right.
Godzilla vs. Gigan – the craziest and most fun of the earlier Godzilla movies I’ve watched so far. Loooved it.
Godzilla & Godzilla: King of the Monsters – watched both the original and the American edit with the Criterion commentary.
Clifford – decided it was time to check this out. It’s ok.
Touki Bouki – this was stunning. From the same set as The Housemaid, I just threw this on and was captivated. The editing here is phenomenal, and the images are incredibly striking. Is this the Hyenas movie you guys have talked about watching in college? The translation for the title on the Criterion disc called it “Journey of the Hyena.”
