I watched this recently after hearing so much about how controversy over it helped lead to the PG-13 rating, and I was surprised by how scary/violent it WASN’T. The only person who I thought died was Mrs Deagel (in a scene played as completely for comedy as Buster Keaton’s One Week), and supposedly in the sequel they say nobody died. I just took it as a silly kids movie which I couldn’t enjoy as an adult. I’m not that into horror comedies, because the comedy tends to undercut the horror (You’re Next is the biggest exception I can think of). I didn’t hate the bar scene that much, because I didn’t have much regard for the movie to lose at that point.

American werewolf in London is both scary and funny. But you’re right, horror comedies tend not to be scary. (Although I do have a soft spot for gremlins)
