Another one very similar to Emma Thompson is Olivia Colman, who was hilarious in a bunch of sketch shows and sitcoms (most notably That Mitchell & Webb Look and Peep Show) before getting international recognition in period dramas. As with a lot of these, you could see the potential for serious drama in her comedy.
