Also, what the hell. I’ve seen Twins two or three times and I have no recollection of that horrifying reveal.

The girls in The Shining aren’t twins! The actresses are, but we’re told that the Grady girls were 8 and 10, and Kubricks shoots them in a way that makes them look distinct, one even seeming slightly taller.
