The Card Counter & especially its central relationship didn’t work for me nearly as well, and that might be because I hadn’t seen Haddish in anything before and thus did not have any pre-existing associations in mind as I watched. I didn’t get the sense that her character was closed off like Isaac’s either. Instead her function seemed to be a bit like the trope of the Manic Pixie Dream Girl who gets the mopey protagonist to open up & live a little, although not nearly so cliched as that.
