After a quick double check he’s more of a newspaper man turned screenwriter, turned writer of one novel turned writer-director, but the first name that came to mind for me was Richard Brooks. He’d originally come to Hollywood to write, but Universal was only giving him cheap genre pictures, so he left and ended up in the Navy in the film unit during World War II, an experience that led to the novel “The Brick Foxhole” which became the movie “Crossfire” and a pretty great career followed.
