Battleship Pretension is a movie discussion podcast started in 2007 by Tyler Smith and David Bax. Since then, we’ve done live comedy shows, written reviews, commentaries and more.
Battleship Pretension is a film discussion show and a film review website founded by Tyler Smith and David Bax. Beginning in March 2007, Battleship Pretension the show (known to fans simply as “BP”) embodies the type of laidback, free-flowing conversations had by lovers of film around the world. Battleship Pretension the website is dedicated to being a destination for those seeking worthwhile opinions on current releases, be they foreign, independent, studio pictures, theatrical, home video releases, etc. From its meager beginnings in Los Angeles, Battleship Pretension has amassed a worldwide audience and readership. From Germany to Korea to Australia, people have tuned in to share in Tyler and David’s love of film. As Battleship Pretension’s following continues to grow, the purpose remains the same: Reach out to the international cinephile community, invite them to join in the discussion and perhaps even start one of their own.
I enjoyed this discussion. It sounds like David doesn’t want to force your paths to align better through direct action, but you’ve been “letting the chips fall where they may” for years and the issue persists, so expecting things to change on their own is dubious. I know you’ve never been a movie-of-the-week podcast like the Filmcast but maybe there’s a way to inject a bit of that structure in a way that aligns with your philosophy and goals, and will gently require you (once in a while) to get on the same page and direct your attention to the same circles. Maybe every episode that ends with a “7” or something you look at Film Comment and choose your most anticipated upcoming movies, make some predictions and commit to watching and commenting on them at a later date. Could take the place of your opening segment so the “main topic” structure stays intact. Or you could choose something on a service like shudder to both watch and talk about, maybe rotate services so maybe shudder one month, mubi or criterion the next, etc. You already have the profile episodes which require you to direct your attention to the same area so this is just a bite-sized version of that. Just some ideas, I know David doesn’t want to be “prescriptive” but without that what are you left with, just hoping things change? Never a good strategy

Some great suggestions. And they will most likely be implemented!

That’s weird – I’m looking at it on Chrome and the player and download button are clearly visible. The download link is https://rss.art19.com/episodes/06959afa-10bc-442c-b144-74b221743279.mp3

Hey David, totally random music rec. I discovered the band KNOWER recently, fell in love with them and having heard your music tastes for years I thought of you. Irreverent music with sick grooves and killer playing (esp drums). Look up on youtube, “Do Hot Girls Like Chords?” and “I’m the President” by KNOWER. They do fun DIY music videos too

Just from a cursory listen, a possible suggestion… David, watch Salesman & report on it to Tyler, maybe even on mic!
This probably sounds too glib (“Couldn’t Itchy share his pie with Scratchy? Then they would both have pie.”) but a commitment from each host to watch one movie the other has seen recently between eps would be comparatively low-effort*, could be dropped at surprising times to spur conversation, & would slightly shrink the gap between pop culture camps.
*This from a guy in the peanut gallery who doesn’t have to do anything to enjoy the spoils of the considerable labor of you two lol
