I liked Her Smell so much more than Vox Lux that I thought about the reason why, and concluded that it was likely because I like the former’s genre of music so much more than the latter’s. But then I also liked Wild Rose (part of a trio of movies around that time about singers who are also bad mothers), and I don’t like country. I then concluded that the difference is that Wild Rose was written by someone who DOES love country, and that’s apparent in the film. Vox Lux itself seems to have a cynical attitude about the music in it, with Portman’s character noting at one point that her commercial success keeps increasing even as the quality declines.
