Fantasy Casting- No Country for Old Men (1964)
I had so much fun casting A History of Violence in the 1940s that I thought I’d try my hand at doing some more retroactive casting. This time around, I chose the Coen Brothers’ No Country for Old Men, reimagining it as a classic Western from the mid-1960s, right around the time that Westerns were becoming more bleak and cynical. So, here we go!Directed by: Otto PremingerWritten by: Wendell MayesStarring:
Ed Tom Bell- Lee Marvin
Anton Chigurh- Klaus Kinski
Llewelyn Moss- Montgomery Clift
Carson Wells- John Cassavetes
Carla Jean Moss- Patricia Neal
Wendell- Red Buttons
Loretta Bell- Mercedes McCambridge
Ellis- Ben Johnson
You found a way to make Anton Chigurh even more horrifying, and for that I tip my hat to you, sir. At first I was a little surprised that you chose Lee Marvin since he would have only been 40 in 1964, but then I remembered he always had the presence of a much older man.
Call me crazy, but not even Herzog could convince Kinski to get a silly haircut like that!
Give me Jack Elam as Chigurh and you’ve got yourself a comedy.
