As I understand it, the main concern the state and federal government has concerning the consumption and transport of raw (unpasteurized) milk is the potential for contracting listeriosis. Listeria monocytogenes is found in the soil (much like tetanus [Clostridium tetani]) and while the occurrence of listeriosis is low (you can come in contact with it without ever catching it) the mortality rate is much higher than something like food poisoning caused by certain strains of Escherichia coli. As far as I know, government agencies like the FDA or local organizations like the police will shutdown a small dairy farm for either selling product that has not properly testing for the presence of Listeria or for testing positive for the presence of Listeria. Because Listeria is in the soil, farm animals often carry it.
While I haven’t seen the film, your complaint that the documentary does not properly explain what the deal is with raw milk would seem to support the concern that I had about the film that it would be one-sided and based more on emotional appeals to the audience rather than informed and scientific explanations (much like The Cove). I think that I’ll pass on this one
