Tyler, you’re not wrong. “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” isn’t a very good movie. Some may chalk it up to simple datedness, but I think most of its hamminess is inherently bad. Plenty of other movies from the same year (The Graduate, In the Heat of the Night) dealt with timely issues, and THEY don’t seem half as dated as GWCTD does. I would compare it to Easy Rider (admittedly a much different film), which was groundbreaking at the time, but not especially good in the modern day.
Moral of the story, great filmmaking stands the test of time. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner may have been important, but doesn’t IMO stand the test of time.
