Sequel Saturday: Blade Runner, The 2nd Lap, by Mat Bradley-Tschirgi
A Blade Runner sequel has been in the works for a few years now, but it appears to be getting rather close to reality. Variety reports director Dennis Villeneuve (Prisoners) is in negotiations to direct with Harrison Ford set to reprise his role as Rick Deckard. The original film was directed back in 1982 by Ridley Scott (Exodus: Gods and Kings). The main question I have about a Blade Runner sequel is how it deals with the ending. Which one will it choose? The theatrical cut and the director’s cut have very different endings. Even the most recent version, the final cut, adds a little wrinkle to the proceedings. In the theatrical version, Deckard comes home to find Rachael sleeping. He sees an origami unicorn and we hear Gaff’s voiceover say, “It’s too bad she won’t live, but then again, who does?” Sax music wails on the soundtrack as a voiceover from Deckard points out that Rachael was a special replicant with no termination date. We see the couple smiling and driving off amidst peaceful shots of a mountain drive. The director’s cut has a far more sinister ending. It starts the same way with Deckard picking up the origami unicorn. The final cut adds flashes of a unicorn trampling through a forest in pain. Deckard walks off as we cut to black hearing Gaff’s voiceover saying, “It’s too bad she won’t live, but then again, who does?”Could the sequel to Blade Runner be the first film that picks up on an ending different than the one used in the theatrical cut? How much will Harrison Ford be in the film? Will we get a definite answer to Deckard being a replicant or not? We’ll know much more closer to the release of this long awaited sequel.
