You know…somehow I still underrate her. I watched Florence Foster Jenkins last week and thought “Meryl Streep is amazing in this” as if that should be a surprise after about a thousand Ocar nods.
She’s also managed, unlike male contemporaries like Pacino, Hoffman or DeNiro to not have a lull in her career and not have to accept roles as “the dad” or character support parts. I think there’s a case to be made she’s had the best career in Hollywood.
Very well said, especially the observation about her career. It gets confusing when you’re rolling your eyes at something because it’s boiler-plate, and hard to remember that when greatness becomes a cliché, it’s still great.
Falconetti making the list doesn’t surprise me, it’s a classic performance and, as Tyler may well say, is the difference between the pick of the BP Film Snob listener over the Film Geek listener. I also can’t quibble with her having such a small filmography as I voted for Judy Holliday who didn’t do terribly much more.
Totally forgot Tilda! She would’ve made my list. Damn.
I’m already so bummed out that Meryl Streep is going to be number one.
