Honorable mentions include albums by Bong, Obsequiae, Exhumation, Julia Holter and Periphery. Best EP goes to Spectral Lore for “Gnosis” (I’m really into atmospheric/post-black metal this year, apparently). And I haven’t spent enough time with the new Baroness album to know if it should be on this list.

I love that Battleship Pretension is making a play for Pitchfork’s corner. I thought about posting my favorite albums of 2015 on Twitter, but this seems just as good a place as any. Here they are…

    1. To Pimp a Butterfly, Kendrick Lamar
    2. New Bermuda, Deafheaven
    3. Eat Pray Thug, Heems
    4. Strangers to Ourselves, Modest Mouse
    5. Meliora, Ghost B.C.
    6. Summertime ’06, Vince Staples

    That’s really all I have that’s new.

I don’t have a comprehensive ranking, but I was a big fan of that new Grimes album. And to me, what made Sunbather so great, which was the mish mash of gorgeous post-rock ambience and the metal vocals, was conspicuously absent from New Bermuda. Not faulting the band for going in a new direction, just didn’t think the new direction was as strong.
