I liked Parasite more than other movies that year, but I also think there’s a good argument that films which have their own separate categories shouldn’t be eligible for Best Picture. It’s already implausible that the BP nominees each year are the best movies IN THE WORLD, might as well make it explicit.
On a matter not of artistic integrity, but instead of entertainment, Sonny Bunch argues that the Oscars should be less predictable (in that blockbuster films should have a chance of winning Best Picture).
The idea of movies changing your political beliefs is less congenial to me because it’s logically fallacious to generalize from fictional evidence:
