Sequel Saturday: The Joker’s Hair Is Wild, by Mat Bradley-Tschirgi

jokerWarner Bros. upcoming movie Suicide Squad will feature a ton of villains in DC Comics, but perhaps the most notable is the Joker played by Jared Leto (Panic Room). The Clown Prince of Crime, the Joker is arguably the most famous villain from the entire DC Universe. It’s unknown how much of a role the Joker will have in the film, but Leto revealed a picture on Snapchat that gives a glimpse to what the Joker’s hair looks like.  The look is much different from what we’ve seen in prior portrayals on film. It’s cropped quite short while keeping the trademark bright green color.

Even though over half a decade has passed since Heather Ledger’s (A Knight’s Tale) Academy Award winning performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight, his legacy still looms large. It’s a smart move that the new Joker onscreen will have a radically different hairstyle to not bring Ledger’s performance to mind. Hopefully, Leto will bring his own unique spin to the villain. Jack Nicholson’s (Mars Attacks!) performance in Tim Burton’s first Batman flick was goofy and a tiny bit threatening. Ledger was dangerous and comic in a more disturbing way.

If I had to guess, Jared Leto will go for a dark take on the character that’s more Ledger than Nicholson. If the recently leaked trailer for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is any indication, Warner Bros. is intent on keeping their comic book movies as grim as possible. It’s always fun to see the Joker on the silver screen. Leto is an inspired casting choice. The different hairstyle is a good first step. I, for one, can’t wait to see his take on the Joker brought to life.
