22. Federico Fellini
8 1/2, LA DOLCE VITA, I VITELLONI, NIGHTS OF CABIRIA
Federico Fellini made movies that echoed the spinning, passionate and indulgent (wink) Italian style. His films were on the one hand were a counteraction to the stark depressing works of the Italian Neo-realists, but were still informed by their groundbreaking style. His characters strive to enjoy “the sweet life,” but are still held down to earth by the tragedies of their humanity. They teach us that though life may be full of hardship and questions, it is still a beautiful circus, where the show must go on.
