The official synopsis was just released for Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, the sixth (!!!) live-action film in the series based off the popular Capcom video games. Out of all the flicks based on games, Resident Evil has been the only one with staying power. The zombie-slaying saga has been around for over a decade at this point.

A key tidbit from the synopsis reveals that the series is returning to the setting of 2004’s Resident Evil: Apocalypse: “As the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead hordes, Alice must return to where the nightmare began – Raccoon City.” Even though the film is called Resident Evil: The Final Chapter, I’m not confident it’s the last in the series. Remember the seven films that came after 1984’s Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter?

One strong thing 2012’s Resident Evil: Retribution had going for it was its ambitious structure taking place over several virtual reality environments. Dead characters from past films would pop up for a scene or two for no good reason. For once, there was a narrative that could justify fallacies and logic. It’s the perfect, not to mention meta (this series is based off video games, after all), way to careen from one action set piece to another. Go from Tokyo to Russia in an instant? Sure, why not!

This series is notable for lasting over a decade, having a female in the lead role, and for having the same writer for each film (Paul W.S. Anderson, who also has directed every entry save for Resident Evil: Apocalypse and Resident Evil: Extinction). We’ll have to wait and see how this “final” entry in the Resident Evil series pans out.
