    I don’t think Henry James’ story is about social strictures at all. It’s about an individual who chooses to isolate himself for idiosyncratic reasons. Nor would I even agree that it’s “well understood” that real people of that “time and place” were more isolated. Rather, per “Bowling Alone”, it is modern society that is more atomized. It seems that, like Mike Flanagan, Bonello has chosen to tell a story about things that interest him more.
