Gerd Wiesler is the kind of character it’s difficult to root for. He’s a Stasi spy who keeps tabs on his own countrymen. But the power of a good film and a good character is in the ability to direct us to sympathize with anyone. The Lives of Others succeeds spectacularly because we truly care for Wiesler.
