The island where Bergman shot several of his films is Fårö. I believe he lived there for the latter half of his life.
Funnily enough, I’ve liked most of the Bergman films to varying degrees but The Passion of Anna was the one that really shook me like no other. You mentioned how cerebral and opaque it is in many ways but that sensibility is contrasted with such immediately involving character moments and viscerally jolting imagery that it adds to a really captivating experience. Bleak as hell though.
And Max von Sydow is of course fantastic as the quietly simmering protagonist.
Of all the movies I watched for this episode, The Passion of Anna is the one I’m most eager to watch again, just to get a little bit closer to what Bergman’s doing.
