Kenneth Anger was very much an influence on John Waters. Water’s 2000 film Cecil B. Demented, is about a terrorist cell of independent filmmakers called “The Sprocket Holes.” They kidnap a famous Hollywood actress and force her to act in their movie. Each of the sprockets introduce themselves by revealing their chest tattoos. Each one is the name of a famous film director. One of them has “Kenneth Anger” tattooed across their chest.

I’ve been working on a short experimental film made up of images taken from the 1992 adaptation of The Lover, and was a little shocked to hear David bring it up! As a part of that project I’ve watched a few Tony Leung Ka-fai movies (Farewell China comes highly recommended, would be my #1 discovery of 2023) as well as some of Duras’ own films (Nathalie Granger and Le Camion being two of my favorites, as well as Mademoiselle, which she had a hand in writing but didn’t direct). I also watched a bunch of Jane March movies, and can second everything Scott said in a previous episode about it being bonkers and super fun.
