I’m with you, David. I came out to my mother when I was 19, much to her chagrin. I felt like I couldn’t lie to her like that. I’m 42 now, and she still doesn’t know I’m an atheist.
Wow, man. Much respect.

David should read Robyn Dawes “House of Cards: Psychology and Psychotherapy Built on Myth”. He was president of the Oregon Psychiatric Association but found that the profession relied heavily on intuition with no scientific basis, and that when they did do research they tended to ignore the findings. For instance: experienced therapists are no more effective than untrained students. It appears that talking to anyone at all about your problems is sufficient to get the effect of therapy. “Rational Choice in an Uncertain World” is another good book from him which explains Bayesian probability and the common mistakes people (as revealed in House of Cards, these people were his colleagues) make when inferring evidence due their unfamiliarity with it. Of course, even Daniel Kahneman sometimes fell for “the law of small numbers” despite coining the phrase.
This sounds fascinating! Thanks for the recommendations!
